I had my first all-day meeting today. Well, to be fair, the meeting itself only lasted four hours, but it was held at the Air Force Research Laboratory, at Edwards Air Force Base, which is about a 1.5-hour drive each way. Then there was a little down time at each end of the meeting, and a 1-hour lunch after it was over. I saw a lot of Joshua trees and some cactuses on the drive. And a bunch of mothballed jetliners (in open storage at the former George Air Force Base). And a borax mine, in a town appopriately named Boron.I've also got a couple more poems finished recently. They are "Time" and "Light". Although really, that last one might be more appropriately titled "Darkness".

Today finishes up my second week of work. I'm finding it challenging enough to be interesting, which is also not hurt by the fact that this is an aerospace program I'm working on. I spend the first week learning the language used (an unlikeable implementation based on LISP) and becoming familiar with the program. This week I enabled it to print out a detailed list of how much each component in a rocket weighs (it could already do that for half of the possibilities, so I just had to extend the functionality). Currently it handles liquid-fueled rockets and solid-fueled rockets, but now I will begin working on adding the capability to employ hybrid rockets, which combine a solid fuel with a liquid oxidizer. You can see pictures from my trip out here. But because there were a couple I really liked, I'm putting those two here for your immediate viewing pleasure (and in a larger size!). The first one is in the Rocky Mountains. The second is in Utah. I-15 goes through some really amazing territory in Arizona, but unfortunately there were no stops I could take to get pictures.
